Part 1 - Qualitative analysis of simple inorganic salt - Preliminary Tests

Qualitative analysis of simple inorganic salt - Preliminary Tests

1. Color test: Based on the observation of color of the salt, following inference is given.

1. Color Test

Bright / Bluish Green - Presence of Nickel or Copper salts

Yellow - Presence of Chromate salts

Pale Pink - Presence of Manganese salts

Colorless - Absence of Nickel, Copper, Chromate, Manganese salts

2. Flame test: A small amount of the salt is made into a paste with con. HCl in a watch glass. The paste is shown into a non-luminous flame.

2a. Bluish green flame

2b. Pale green flame

2c. Brick red flame

2d. Crimson red flame

3. Action of heat: A small amount of the salt is heated in a dry test tube.
3. Action of heat

Brown vapours - Presence of Nitrate

Violet vapours  Presence of Iodide

White sublimate on the sides of the test tube - Presence of Manganese salts

Yellow when hot, white when cold - Presence of Zinc

No characteristic change - Absence of Nitrate, Iodide, Manganese, Zince salts
