Part 2 - Qualitative analysis of simple inorganic salt - Anion test 1 (GIF images)

Qualitative analysis of simple inorganic salt - Anion test with dil. HCl

1. Salt with dil. HCl:

To a small amount of the salt, dil. HCl is added.

1a. Effervescence

Observation    : Brisk effervescence

Inference         Presence of carbonate

Explanation for the observation:

Carbonate salts react with dil. HCl and give carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The evolution is observed as effervescence.

Warm the above solution.

1b. Colorless gas with rotten egg smell

Observation    : Colorless gas with the smell of rotten egg turning lead acetate paper into black.

Inference         Presence of sulphide

Explanation for the observation:

Sulphide salts react with dil. HCl on heating gives hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas, which smells as rotten egg.

The evolved gas reacts with lead acetate paper and forms lead sulphide (PbS), which is black in color.

Observation    : No characteristic change.

Inference         : Absence of carbonate and sulphide
